Aspen for Sauna and Steam Room — Properties, Advantages, and Applications

Aspen is one of the most popular hardwood species used for sauna construction and interior finishing. It is valued for its light natural tone, comfortable thermal conductivity, and resistance to humid environments. Aspen has been used for decades in traditional Finnish saunas and modern saunas for both cladding and bench construction.

Thanks to the absence of resin and proper kiln drying, aspen remains a safe and stable material even at high temperatures.

Why Aspen Is Suitable for Steam Rooms

A sauna combines heat and humidity. Interior materials must be:

• Safe when heated
• Resistant to temperature fluctuations
• Dimensionally stable
• Comfortable in contact with the body

Aspen meets these requirements due to its natural properties.

Key Properties of Aspen

Low Thermal Conductivity

Aspen does not overheat, keeping the surface comfortable even at high temperatures.

No Resin Release

Unlike softwoods, aspen does not emit resin when heated.

Resistance to Humidity

With proper drying and ventilation, the wood maintains its shape for many years.

Uniform Structure

Its light, even texture creates a clean and refined interior.

Eco-Friendly

Natural wood without chemical treatments, safe for sauna use.

Aspen Cladding

Aspen cladding is used for:

• Wall and ceiling finishes in steam rooms
• Dressing rooms and relaxation areas
• Light and minimalist interiors

We offer Grade A aspen cladding — completely knot-free and kiln-dried to 8–10% moisture content. This ensures:

• Dimensional stability
• Clean visual appearance
• Minimal risk of deformation

STS and STP profiles allow you to choose between a sharper architectural rhythm or a softer, calmer design line.

Aspen for Sauna Benches

The sauna bench is the most heavily used element, as it is in direct contact with the body.

Aspen is well suited for benches due to:

• Smooth, knot-free surface
• Low thermal conductivity
• Resistance to humidity
• Stable structure after kiln drying (8–10%)

The light color of aspen benches enhances the feeling of cleanliness and spaciousness in the steam room.
