alder

Alder for Sauna and Steam Room — Properties, Advantages, and Applications

Alder is one of the most expressive hardwood species used for sauna and steam room interiors. It is valued for its warm pinkish-honey tone, attractive grain pattern, and resistance to moisture and high temperatures.

Historically, alder has been used for structures exposed to water. In sauna interiors, it creates a richer and warmer atmosphere compared to lighter species such as aspen and linden.

Why Alder Is Suitable for Steam Rooms

Materials used in steam rooms must be:

• Safe when heated
• Resistant to humid environments
• Dimensionally stable
• Comfortable in contact with the body

Alder meets these requirements thanks to its natural fiber structure and low thermal conductivity.

Key Properties of Alder

Low Thermal Conductivity

The surface does not overheat and remains comfortable even at high temperatures.

No Resin Release

Like other hardwood species, alder does not emit resin when heated.

Resistance to Humidity

With proper kiln drying, alder tolerates temperature and humidity fluctuations while maintaining its shape.

Expressive Grain

Its pinkish-honey tone deepens when heated, adding warmth and character to the interior.

Eco-Friendly

Natural wood without chemical treatments, safe for sauna use.

Alder Cladding

Alder cladding is used for:

• Wall and ceiling finishes in steam rooms
• Dressing rooms and relaxation areas
• Creating warm, refined interiors

We offer Grade A alder cladding — completely knot-free and kiln-dried to 8–10% moisture content, ensuring:

• Dimensional stability
• Smooth, clean surface
• Minimal risk of deformation

STS and STP profiles allow you to select a finishing style — from strong geometry to a softer visual rhythm.

Alder for Sauna Benches

Sauna benches are subject to constant use. Alder is suitable for bench construction due to:

• Smooth, knot-free surface
• Low thermal conductivity
• Resistance to humidity
• Uniform wood structure

The warm tone of alder makes benches a visual focal point in the steam room and enhances the overall interior style.

Applications of Alder

• Wall and ceiling cladding
• Benches and loungers
• Backrests and decorative elements
• Sauna, steam room, and countryside interiors
